As detailed in Škoda Storyboard’s article, “90 Years on the Production Line,” the transition from manual assembly to conveyor belt production marked a turning point in automotive manufacturing. In the early 20th century, automakers sought ways to reduce costs and expand access to vehicles. While engineering innovations were pursued, the ultimate solution came through the principle of economies of scale, leading to the adoption of conveyor belt systems.
Škoda’s Mladá Boleslav plant introduced its first conveyor belt system 90 years ago, transforming production efficiency. During this time, car ownership in Czechoslovakia was limited, with just over 12,000 registered passenger vehicles in 1925. Thanks to protective trade policies and strategic investments, brands like Laurin & Klement (later part of Škoda) could sustain operations and innovate. Inspired by competitors, co-founder Václav Klement pushed for investment in conveyor systems, a move that cemented Škoda’s position as a manufacturing leader.
Today, conveyor belt technology remains the backbone of high-volume automotive production, enabling manufacturers worldwide to achieve unmatched efficiency and quality.
